![]() ![]() It does lack ranged combat, or used to (i haven't played it in a while), however. And if that isn't a problem, you might want to look into Battle of Wesnot. I can endorse Fantasy Wars and Eleven Legacy if you enjoy the combat of Warlock, but both don't incorporate any city management. That said, yes the actual combat in Civ5 is comparable to Warlock (more than can be said for games like Fallen Enchantress).įallen Enchantress is more like HoMnM than like Warlock. HEX STRATEGY GAMES ASCENSION MODSThere might be Mods that turn Civ5 more into a game focused just on war, but as it stands, the vanilla Civ5 is not only slow and boring, but also doesn't focus on fighting but on civilisation management. Civ5 on the other hand is all about manageing your nation, sometimes involving war with your neighbors, but more often than not you'll research stuff to make your people happy and maintain the Status you have. You just build your cities in order to get units and ressources you need for war. Even with all the addons Civ is a civilisation mangament game. Civ5 is only good with at least the Gods & Kings addon, preferably you also want the Brave New World one to make it a good game. Warlock is the more enjoyable game if you are looking for a Strategy experiance. In Civ its all about outteching the enemy, you will eventually even have situations where you might face Bowmen with your Tanks. I own both Civ as well as Warlock and Civ isn't like Warlock. There's a demo so you don't have anything to lose. Even if you didn't like Civ 4 you might like 5. Originally posted by Chimpster:I'd give Civ 5 a whirl. Ignoring hexes but similar to Warlock there is Fallen Enchantress (as mentioned above) or Conquest of Elysium 3 (and also its big brother but not on Steam (yet?) Dominions 3) HEX STRATEGY GAMES ASCENSION FULLIf you meant the Russian Civil War there is Strategic Command WW1 Breakthrough which has a full RCW game (very good as well but using squares/tiles rather than hexes) or Revolution Under Siege (area based) If you meant the American Civil War (OK you probably did) there are quite a few such as War Between the States, Ageod's American Civil War and Forge of Freedom, all though are area movement (FoF does have a hex turn based battle system within it however) and are fairly to very high on the complexity level. One that Steam does do and is very good and not too difficult to get into (and there is a demo) is Unity of Command.Īs for English Civil War games this is a sadly overlooked period and I'm not aware of any computer wargames on the subject. Steam doesn't really go in for proper hex based wargames but there are loads of them such as (at the introdutory level, all also WW2) Panzer Corps, Commander Europe at War (which also has Napoleonic and WWI sister games), Battle Academy (OK this is squares rather than hexes) and Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear (a very good board game conversion). Then there is the predecessor to Elven Legacy, Fantasy Wars. As you enjoy Warlock my best suggestion would be its predecessor by the same developers Elevn Legacy (or the Elven Legacy Collection) which is on Steam - its Warlock with more War and less (no) city building. ![]()
